Hamish Fenton, a 12-year-old boy from Rye, N.Y., visited with Saquon Barkley last season when he was with the Giants. Fenton is battling a rare form of cancer. From his hospital room at Memorial Sloan Kettering a week and a half ago, Hamish Fenton made a decision that he knows won’t be popular with many of his fellow Giants fans.
Then someone tapped Cassie Fenton on the arm and pointed at the Giants logo on the 50-yard-line. Hamish was standing with Barkley in the middle the field for the opening coin toss. Hamish had been drafted, without anyone knowing, as an honorary game captain. Maybe seeing the Eagles win a second title with a player they drafted might shake the Giants franchise out of its slumber. Maybe watching Barkley hold up that MVP trophy in New Orleans this weekend will be the sleepless night John Mara needs to wake up as an owner. Maybe all that will convince general manager Joe Schoen that not every decision can be made with analytics and positional value.“Of course, Hamish still wishes he was wearing the blue and red!” Cassie Fenton said.
