The boy's autopsy revealed he weighed 19 pounds and his condition had been “chronic,' according to a criminal complaint.
A 4-year-old boy who died after authorities found him unresponsive in his parents’ Harlem apartment over the weekend suffered from dehydration, starvation and severe malnutrition to the point where a hospital doctor reported he “was likely going to die within the next day or so,” according to a criminal complaint released on Wednesday.
According to the complaint, Modlin's mother, 26-year-old Nytavia Ragsdale, claimed she was feeding him and never limited his food intake. But prosecutors allege she provided “varying explanations for Jahmik’s physical condition and weight,” including that he had “been vomiting up all of his food and then eating his vomit” for months and he could not "keep food down and ha diarrhea a few times a week.
The boy's father — identified by police as Laron Modlin, 25 — said the children rarely left the apartment and had only been to the doctor once since moving to the home roughly two years ago, prosecutors allege. He told the authorities that he and Ragsdale provided food to all of the children, according to the complaint, but then stated that “he must not have noticed the condition of his son because he is often playing video games or on his phone.
