Director M. Night Shyamalan reveals the lessons he learned from TheLastAirbender's failure, particularly acknowledging that the movie was not suited for him.

M. Night Shyamalan candidly reveals what he learned from his ill-received The Last Airbender movie. Shyamalan's The Last Airbender was the first live-action adaptation of the beloved animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender. The show told the story of Aang, the titular Avatar, who woke up after 100 years frozen in ice in a world that was amid a long-running war. Aang, who was an Airbender, had to master the remaining three elements — Water, Earth, and Fire — to restore peace.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Shyamalan was honest about his experience directing The Last Airbender. The Last Airbender 2 never happened due to the first movie's poor reception, and Shyamalan admits that he was not the best person to have led the Avatar: The Last Airbender movie adaptation.

"All of us go through moments in our lives where we want to be accepted. We get tired of the fight and having to defend who we are. And tacitly, or sometimes overtly, they’ll say, “You are wrong for doing it this way. You’re arrogant. If you just do this, this and this, it’ll all work out for you.” And I went, “OK, maybe you’re right.” So I made a genuine effort to join the system, but I learned that the special thing that makes me happy was hard to do within that system.

Another major point that Shyamalan's adaptation failed to properly recreate was the diversity of the original story. The Last Airbender movie's problems stem greatly from the way the cartoon's iconic characters were handled. The movie generated a huge controversy by casting White actors to portray the Asian main characters from Avatar: The Last Airbender, while simultaneously casting Indian and Iranian actors for the movie's villains, the Fire Nation.

Finally, the movie failed at the most fantastical aspect of Avatar: The Last Airbender — the bending. One of the most exciting things in the lead-up to Shyamalan's The Last Airbender was the prospect of seeing how the cartoon's elemental bending powers would translate to live-action. Despite this anticipation, the bending was extremely dull. The Last Airbender had a decent budget of $150 million, which made the poorly done CGI on the bending scenes shocking.
