Shyer mice were more likely to persist in solving tasks, challenging the belief that boldness drives innovation.
A new study in evolutionary biology tested how personality traits such as boldness and shyness influence innovation. Shy mice, it turns out, have a higher chance of succeeding than their bold counterparts.A team from the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Biology tested the problem-solving abilities of 100 wild house mice in semi-natural enclosures and controlled lab arenas.
The environments in which the study took place changed the results drastically. The findings revealed that the likelihood to solve problems was higher in the controlled conditions. In the lab setting, 60 percent of mice solved at least one problem. In the “socially dynamic, real-world-style enclosures,” only about 21 percent did. The mice behaved very differently depending on their surroundings.
