Chargers give up first goals but rally to stay unbeaten
Timber Creek boys soccer coach Sean Ortzman was just curious to see how his players would react when it did, and he could not have been more pleased with their response on Tuesday. The Chargers gave up their first two goals of the season but had an answer each time as they battled host Deptford to a 2-2 tie in a hard-fought game by both teams in Tri-County Conference Liberty Division action.
“We took a punch and we figured out we can still play the game. That was good, because after the second goal we still didn’t put our heads down. It really goes to the character of our leaders. Our seniors, Lukas and Popal , are doing a great job this year and they’re going to be the engine that keeps us going forward.”
“We’ve been talking about it for the last six games,” Mullison, a sophomore, said of the shutout streak. “We knew it was going to happen — we weren’t going to go all year without getting scored on. So were just like, ‘If it happens, keep our heads up and go out there and play.’ That’s what we did: We came out in the second half and put one in early, and we just kept fighting.”
“Our mindset is always to defend our home and to not lose here, because this is our field and we have to make them respect us in our territory,” he said. “We heard a lot of things about them, how they had a good streak going and nobody had scored a goal on them. I think we played pretty well and we had a lot of opportunities.”
Mullison’s shot caromed off the support inside the net — some Deptford fans initially thought it hit the post — for his fourth goal of the season. “We’re a family and we pick up for each other. If one person does bad, the next person does even better to help him up. That’s just how it is. Popal sat me down and said, ‘We’re going to get it back for you.’ And they did.”Deptford coach Kevin Sherry didn’t use Timber Creek’s shutout streak as motivation, but instead stressed the importance of the game as being against a division foe. The Chargers are 1-0-1 in the Liberty and the Spartans are 1-1-1.
