Twenty years ago, Showtime took a chance on Soul Food the series. The series transformed the way viewers and Hollywood perceived Black families. Over the course of five seasons, the show garnered seven NAACP Image Awards and a Primetime Emmy nomination.

“Every now and then you get something that maximizes you,” Parker smiles. “The writing was very rich. All the words mattered. All the given circumstances mattered. It required the actor to use everything inside of them to bring truth to the material that was demanding; that we tell these stories in a truthful way.”

Together, Henderson and her team managed the obstacles that producing an unprecedented Black-themed drama series faced. She dealt with gaining the respect of the crew, the technical challenges of lighting such a variety of different shades of Black skin tones and exceeding studio expectations. Additionally, Henderson fought for the show’s budget every season.

“It set a precedence for us and for Black excellence,” Malinda stated. “For just showing up and being truthful in your work and truthful about depicting life, not just Black lives, but lives. These are things that happen to people, not just Black people. Yes, there are nuances to Black life; however, these were universal stories that we were telling.”
