Downtown San Diego businesses are putting pressure on the city to clear homeless encampments
This file photo shows a homeless encampment on the sidewalk along Commercial Street in downtown San Diego. Downtown San Diego’s business community is putting pressure on the City Council to clear homeless encampments and one plan involves giving the mayor more power to handle the problem. If passed, Gloria could sign off on years-long contracts worth up to $5 million without needing council approval. Staffers would additionally be able to unilaterally accept grants.
Giving the mayor power to make quick decisions without the approval of the city council will help expedite solutions to the problem. Limiting the amounts that can be spent without approval will help prevent abuse of the power.Regardless of who the mayor is or what party they represent, it isn’t a good idea to circumvent the City Council with additional mayoral emergency powers.
