Should NFL teams ever try to draft a starting QB after Round 1? NFLDraft
No team should ever repeat the horrible mistake the Denver Broncos made during the 2019 NFL Draft.
Of the 11,838 regular-season quarterback starts there have been in the NFL since the year 2000, a total of 3,448 of them belong to quarterbacks who were drafted outside the first round. On the surface, that doesn’t seem too poignant in either direction.
, and in that piece, I detailed why each team might be in need of one of these supposedly lesser quarterbacks—it’s because they might need a backup. It’s extremely rare for a team to draft a quarterback on day two or three with the intention of ever starting them in non-emergency scenarios. Even if selected in the second round, it’s no guarantee that the player is not just an insurance policy for the starter.
And beyond the second round, it’s often a random lottery between getting a generational outlier who was totally misevaluated and turns into a superstar, or a player destined to be a journeyman only mentioned during trivia nights where you have to say things like, “Oh yeah, the Steelers did draft Brian St. Pierre back in 2003.”
