Should Matt LaFleur give up offensive play-calling? GoPackGo

is considering giving up play-calling duties in 2023. The Packers managed just 16 points in Sunday’s gut-wrenching do-or-die defeat to the Detroit Lions. LaFleur should mull all options, but it’s worth acknowledging he’s been a successful play-caller since taking over the Packers.

The Packers finished the 2022 regular season having averaged 21.8 points and 337.9 total yards of offense per game. They ranked 14th and 17th across the league in those respective categories. They represent the worst marks of LaFleur’s four-year tenure as the Packers’ head coach. It makes sense for LaFleur to evaluate all aspects of his duties throughout the offseason given the pedestrian numbers, but forfeiting play-calling duties would feel unnecessarily reactionary to a down season.

The Packers’ offense became significantly more productive as the 2022 season progressed. The Packers averaged 28 points per contest throughout their final six regular-season games. Green Bay’s late-season offensive success coincided with the emergence of young playmakers such as rookie wide receiver. It insinuates the Packers could avoid the early-season struggles that ultimately doomed their 2022 campaign. LaFleur doesn’t have to make a change in order for that to happen.
