Should Hollywood ditch hosts at awards shows?

70th ANNUAL PRIMETIME EMMY AWARDS -- Pictured: Hosts Colin Jost, Michael Che during the 70th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards held at the Microsoft Theater on September 17th, 2018 -- Yesterday, at the Television Critics Association press tour, Fox Entertainment CEO Charlie Collier announced next month's 71Primetime Emmy Awards show will be host-free. Rumors of such a decision have been floating around, especially as the show neared its September 22 air date with no announcement of a host.

Will host-free awards shows become the latest Hollywood trend? Perhaps it’s too soon to tell but one thing is certain, not having a host at this year's Oscars gave the show a 13% boost in ratings with 29.6 million viewers tuning in. There are a few reasons a show sans host might be attractive to viewers. One, the show is shorter and seemingly more streamlined. This year’s Oscars telecast ran from 8:00 p.m. to 11:13 p.m. In years past, the show has run painfully long, dragging on to as late as 12:40 a.m.

Without the added pressures of securing a host, hoping the chosen host is the right one for the job and planning their performance, producers have much more time to focus on other elements of the show, such as the year's nominated series and talent. In addition, A-list candidates have grown increasingly wary of taking on the highly-scrutinized hosting job after facing criticism on social media.
