. Barkley will be absent from the Giants’ offseason program on Monday as a result. Barkley is taking every step necessary in an attempt to gain leverage in long-term contract negotiations.
Giants general manager Joe Schoen entered the offseason with sizable decisions to make regarding the futures of Barkley and quarterback. Both of Schoen’s cornerstone pieces played out the 2022 campaign on expiring contracts. The Giants were backed into a corner after experiencing a shocking amount of success last season that made it increasingly difficult to move on from either party. Jones and Barkley proved their worth.
Schoen unsurprisingly responded by signing his quarterback to an extension first. Jones received a four-year, $160 million extension. Barkley was handed the short end of the stick via the franchise tag. Barkley is rightfully disappointed. Barkley is scheduled to earn a fully-guaranteed $10.091 million via the tag in 2023, per Spotrac. It’s below Barkley’s desired annual salary , not to mention the lack of long-term financial security that willupset Barkley. Skipping offseason programs is Barkley’s attempt to put pressure on Schoen and the Giants’ front office.
The Giants and Barkley have a mid-July deadline to negotiate a multi-year extension. The Giants can’t penalize Barkley for skipping portions of the offseason because he isn’tunder contract. The situation is a contract-related standoff that could drag into the summer months.
