Controversial new reading material for Texas elementary school students sparked a debate on Tuesday at a State Board of Education hearing. The goal of the class
room materials being considered is to give students more rigorous instruction and help newer teachers create more lessons. But during Tuesday’s public testimony some of the language arts material came under fire.
“The struggle is whether these stories have a place in public schools,” said one speaker at Tuesday’s hearing. “We’re teaching students stories that should be taught in Sunday School, that parents should be teaching at home. We should not be teaching these stories in public school like they are factually accurate,” said Carisa Lopez with the Texas Freedom Network.
The President of Texas Values disputes that and said those arguing against the new curriculum want to censor the ability to talk about the Bible and its significance in America.
