Eleven basketball teams are ineligible for the state tournament because of infractions

An incident at a Shore Conference boys basketball game in Toms River earlier this week caused one school to cancel its final game of the year and led another to forfeit a state tournament game.

There was an altercation on Tuesday toward the end of a regular season game between Asbury Park and Toms River East, during which players left the bench area and that “forced the game to prematurely end,” according to Toms River East Athletic Director Ted Gillen. After the incident was reviewed by the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association, Toms River East was given six disqualifications, Gillen said. Since those players had to sit out, Toms River East did not have enough players to play against Freehold Borough on Thursday and canceled the game. That would have been the final game for Toms River East , which did not qualify for the 16-team state tournament bracket in South, Group 4 this season.
