He stole £29 worth of steaks

A shoplifter of steaks told a district judge how he had stayed off drugs since May 2021. Christopher Hall, 37, of Tithe Barn Court, Newark, told Judge Sunil Khanna of his struggles since he stole £29 worth of steaks from Morrisons, King's Road, Newark, on October 11 last year.

Although he did not give a reason behind the theft, which he pleaded guilty to on Tuesday , he told how he has fines he is already paying. He pays those every Monday and had had to borrow money to come to Nottingham Magistrates' Court today. He said he was now "£10 out of pocket", on Universal Credit, and living with his pensioner mum in a one-bed flat in Newark. "I won't be able to eat for the day," he said as he was invited to address the judge.

"Drugs are no longer an issue", Hall added. The judge told him it seemed to him he could stay out of trouble as he conditionally discharged him for six months, ordered he pay compensation to Morrisons for the steak, and a victim surcharge of £26.
