In leaked memo, Shopify CEO Tobi Lütke announces CTO departure and other engineering shakeups
The departures came as Shopify made a series of changes to emphasize productivity and efficiency among its workforce. In a move it called"Chaos Monkey 2023" internally, Lütke's post also outlined several other organizational changes, including that VP of engineering Farhan Thawar would take on more responsibility, and that VP of product Carl Rivera would become head of product for Shopify's merchant services and Shop divisions.
With Allan's departure, I'm retiring the CTO jersey. I've been the head of R&D since I started Shopify. I'll take on that role more explicitly, and in a flatter organization. The bench strength in engineering is tremendous, and the closer we can get leaders to the work, the faster we can ship our products.
I've asked Carl to join Kaz's team as head of Product, leading Shop and Merchant Services. Lawrence and Merchant Services Engineering will also report to Kaz. Data will report to Sam as a part of our strategic initiatives. Data informs everything we do and needs a front row seat to the roadmap.
