And in defense of the Rangers’ bullpen, it continued its recent streak of reliance well enough in Monday’s game to even give Texas a shot in extras. Josh Sborz and Will Smith combined to allow just one hit in 3.1 scoreless innings.
The Rangers advanced a runner to second in the sixth and seventh innings — Taveras in the sixth and Adolis García in the seventh, both of whom walked — but couldn’t score. A Marcus Semien flyout stranded Taveras in the sixth; a Jonah Heim groundout ended the seventh.And in the ninth, with a chance to walk the game off, the Rangers had Seager and Garcia on third and second respectively. But Jung struck out swinging, and Heim hit an inning-ending flyout to left field.
Semien, whose .475 batting average with runners in scoring position is fourth-best in the league, grounded out to end the inning with a 99-mile-per-hour scorcher to Angels shortstop Zach Neto. Neto’s throw from short to first base,, was 94.3 miles per hour — the fastest tracked infield assist leaguewide this season.
The Rangers plated a run in the 12th on a misfielded Mitch Garver ground ball which scored Jung. Semien, who represented the tying run, struck out to end the game with Garver at second and Taveras at first.
