Shocking increase in initiation deaths

Reacting to the death of 26 initiates in the province since the current initiation season began on November 12, Premier Oscar Mabuyane has called for an urgent provincial indaba to try to find solutions to curb deaths ahead of next year’s winter initiate intake. In most cases, initiates die because of dehydration due to their being deprived of water by their caregivers or traditional nurses .

The current season continues until January 12, meaning that, unless things change quickly and drastically, more young men could die in the bush. “The fact that most of the initiates we lost were in illegal schools means that some of our communities aren’t playing their part in safeguarding our tradition.

Despite his busy schedule, the premier personally visited the initiation school of five sons of his relatives in his village of Deberha a number of times, as he believed it was the responsibility of men in the community to ensure the wellbeing of boys. The premier said 70 000 boys had registered to undergo traditional initiation in the province this season.
