'The time to act is NOW' ParentInfantFdn
Juliet Blank Associate Editor A new report out today shows the startling impact that COVID-19 and lockdown has had and is still having on parents-to-be and new parents.
'Babies In Lockdown' – an online survey of 5,474 expectant mothers, new parents and parents of toddlers undertaken during the pandemic – highlights the chronic under-resourcing of services for families, the inequalities in babies’ early experiences and a worsening forecast for the sector due to the pandemic.
We already know that the pandemic is not affecting all communities equally – research published in the British Medical Journal in late May found that pregnant black women were eight times more likely to be admitted to hospital with coronavirus than pregnant white women, with pregnant Asian women four times more likely.
Best Beginnings, Home-Start UK and Parent-Infant Foundation are now urging the government to provide a ‘Baby Boost’ to enable local services to better support families who have had a baby during the lockdown and to introduce a new ‘Parent-Infant Premium’ for local commissioners working to tackle early inequalities.
