WATCH THE VIDEO ABOVE: Shocking criminal history of teen driver responsible for crash that killed mate.A fight broke out in the court’s public gallery between family members of Smith and the offender, who cannot be named due to his age, as video of the crash was played. The incident led to a short adjournment and increased security.
In the tragedy that left locals horrified, Smith, the driver and four other teens piled into the stolen car to go for a joyride. Smith was killed instantly and at least three other passengers were injured, two of them seriously, when the vehicle crashed on Pease St in Manoora.“Tragically, it was Bradley who paid the ultimate price,” crown prosecutor Christopher Cook told the court.
The court heard the driver had 144 prior convictions, including 13 charges for unlawful use of a motor vehicle, as well as numerous assaults and burglary offences. Since being in detention, the boy had been involved in 77 incidents, including physical altercations, security threats, disruptive behaviour and damage.Cook said he supported a view that the boy was not able to be rehabilitated.“Every time he’s out of custody he is re-offending. The community is at risk every time he is out of custody,” the prosecutor said.“The Cairns community has been under siege. He is a recidivist high-risk offender.
