Employees share surprising and insightful secrets from their jobs that would shock the average person, revealing behind-the-scenes realities and unexpected practices.

Employees Are Revealing The"Common Knowledge" In Their Jobs That Would Leave The Average Person Completely Shocked, And Whoaaaaain their field of work that the average person would find shocking, and as an average person myself, I was quite shocked.

Here are some interesting, surprising, or extremely insightful truths and realizations from people's jobs:"I work in wholesale produce, and it would break your heart to know how much food we have to throw away." "Many theater costumes aren't washed, but instead sprayed with vodka water to kill bacteria that otherwise cause them to stink. It's worse if the show is double-cast and it's a two-show day, because the second performer has to wear a costume that's slightly damp with someone else's sweat. Wearing a t-shirt underneath helps, and pit pads are sometimes used as well. They're snapped in place and laundered daily." "This is probably obvious already, but Nick Jr.'s goal is not to make good content for babies; it's to make addictive content for babies. I work for their YouTube department, and it's solely focused on keeping babies glued to their screen as long as possible, at all costs." "I'm a safety guy for a construction company. You know those meat diagrams at a butcher shop that show which part of the animal makes what cut of meat? Every state work comp has what is called a 'meat chart.' It basically lists out what each body part is worth, and how many weeks off you get if you lose said body part, or if it becomes non-functioning." "Half my job is basically watching people find out the hard way that 'no one reads that stuff' is not a legal defense." "I'm a janitor. There's an ungodly amount of people in big fancy office buildings who have their usernames and passwords on a sticky note on their monitor." "Quite a lot of surgical instruments are just the same shit you can get at Home Depot, but designed to be sterilized." "I've been teaching for years. The little ones will tell us everything. Parents, you probably have no secrets. I've heard about nicknames, fights, moms who are sex workers, dads who are cheating, and some other innocent but embarrassing stories about families. I keep my mouth shut, but it's hard to look at the parents sometimes." "Most men say they like deep tissue massages, but they can't actually handle it. So I dial it way back, and many will say, 'So can anybody else handle as much pressure as me?' Nope. You're one in a million, my guy." "The process of getting electricity to your house is so complex and technical that you can't believe how cheap it really is." "Concrete doesn't 'dry,' it cures through a chemical reaction, and will do so under water. The same design mix of concrete with cure harder underwater than above." "That one buy you found in that one game that made you wonder how it slipped past quality assurance? We already knew about it. Corporate just decided that it wasn't a big enough deal to miss the ship date." "Many patients in the hospital don't actually have an acute medical reason to be there; they just don't have social support or resources needed to safely discharge them from the hospital. This also means insurance doesn't pay the hospital, since they don't meet 'in-patient criteria.' Because of that, hospitals are basically providing care without getting paid." "I've worked in food service for most of the last 25 years. No one — not a single person out of the hundreds I've worked with — has ever properly followed correct food safety protocol 100% of the time. Not even close. It just does not happen." "As someone in accounting, people are always surprised by how much of the job is just repetitive, detail-heavy work. It's not glamorous finance wizardry; it's a lot of reconciling, fixing tiny errors, and being perfect under deadlines. It's not exciting, but it's incredibly essential." "Makeup for a natural-looking photo shoot generally involves tiny applications of 50 different products, hand-blended to suit the individual skin tone, using 20 different brushes, and then lots of Photoshop to make it even more perfect-looking in post. And that doesn’t include the makeup assistant. Also, many magazines skip the foundation and just photoshop it in later." "How much store-brand stuff is basically name-brand stuff but in different packaging. It's wild how much I've learned and saved from knowing this." "CPR doesn't work most of the time, even on healthy, young people. And even then, there's a reasonably high chance that it will leave you significantly disabled. Going through CPR is basically like being in a car crash. If we say CPR isn't going to work on your 80-year-old grandma who spends all day in a chair with heart failure, emphysema, and active cancer, we're not trying to avoid work; we're trying to avoid futile cruelty. But obviously, if you see someone collapse, do good quality CPR immediately and ask questions later.""As a therapist, people can tell me about their past crimes — including murder — and I can't tell anyone. There are some exceptions, but people are always shocked by this." "Working at an optician's taught me that most people have no idea how bad their eyesight actually is. They'll walk in saying, 'My vision's fine,' then read the chart like they're trying to guess lottery numbers. The wild part is that when they finally put on the right prescription, they go, 'Wow, I didn't know the world looked like this.' It happens way more often than you'd think." "Bleeding gums mean you have to keep brushing them, not stop and avoid them. It can be a sign that you're starting to brush them correctly. Your gums will only improve if they are bleeding when you brush, as this allows them to heal and become stronger. If you don't brush gums that bleed, they will get worse and more painful." "I'm a sign language interpreter. Interpreting is one of the most complex cognitive tasks that the human brain can undertake, yet the overwhelming majority of hearing people I work with have no idea that ASL isn't just English with your hands. Also, there's an overwhelming majority of Deaf people who are born into hearing families who never learn to sign fluently. Knowing that the students I interpret for can have more complex conversations with me than their own mothers is a heavy weight I carry in my heart." "Dog and cat food is good until the 'best before' date on the bag, but only if the bag is unopened. Once you open the bag, you have up to eight weeks to use it if you're storing it in the optimal way, which is inside an airtight container. If you're just rolling down the bag and clipping it closed, the fats will oxidize and start going rancid inside of a month. If you pour the food into a storage bin, you need to use it within a month and wash out the bin with dish soap between each use to avoid spoilage. The larger bag of kibble is only valuable if you store it properly and use it before it starts to spoil. Pancreatitis and liver disease make for expensive vet visits." Lastly:"I work in animal rescue and am a vet tech. People will give up a dog they've had for years without shedding a tear. They treat it like an errand. Some people don't stay with their pet when it gets euthanized. In the first instance, the dog will not want to leave the lobby and will watch them walk away, confused, and try to follow. In the second, they look expectantly around the room for their person before falling asleep."If I had to get my heart broken after reading that last one, then so do you, sorry!
