Mobile County Sheriff's Office launches its own electronic monitoring program following concerns over private companies.

After a pair of high-profile incidents involving murder defendants that prompted calls to replace private companies that have been in charge of electronic monitoring , Sheriff Burch said deputies will set up a geofence around each defendant’s home or other authorized place. “If they go outside that geofence, the deputy will get an immediate notification, and we will respond accordingly,” he said. Burch said he has hired a couple of deputies and reassigned others.

Operating initially out of a room at the department headquarters on Water Street, the unit will begin operations on Feb. 1. Burch said he has ordered 220 ankle monitors from a company called Shadowtrack. Presiding Circuit Judge Wesley Pipes told FOX10 News about 180 people currently are under electronic monitoring.“Fundamentally, it’s a law enforcement function,” he said. The Mobile County Commission made the switch possible by voting to spend $1.6 million to get the program up and running. The city of Mobile has pledged to split that cost, although the City Council has not yet voted on it. People under supervision will pay a $75 setup fee plus $10 a day to defray the cost, although the Sheriff’s Office said it does not expect to break even. Horatio Donzell Stewart – accused of gunning down a man at an apartment complex in December 2022 – went to a Saraland shoe store and a Mississippi casino last year without a judge’s permission. Mobile County District Judge Jennifer Wright revoked Stewart’s bond and Accupoint also was in charge of monitoring Nyyon Elijah Sanders, who was on bond in a murder case involving a fatal shooting on Navco Road in 2022. Prosecutors say he took advantage of a dead battery on his monitoring device to leave his home in November and commitFrank Cassady, chief deputy at the Sheriff’s Office, said the system will send an immediate alert to deputies regardless of the hour. “We’ll be able to monitor them no matter where they’re at,” he said
