Sheriff's deputies in SWAT standoff with armed suspect in Pauma Valley [Breaking]

A man suspected of assault with a deadly weapon in a rural neighborhood near Palomar Mountain refused to surrender to deputies on Tuesday, prompting a standoff that stretched from late morning into the afternoon.

A sheriff’s spokesperson said the man, who was armed with some type of weapon but not a gun, was reportedly involved in an assault at a home on Amago Road near state Route 76 in Pauma Valley shortly before 9 a.m. He fled from the home to a nearby field, where he refused repeated orders to surrender to law enforcement officers, said sheriff’s Lt. Nanette McMasters.

Sheriff’s SWAT officers and crisis negotiators were dispatched and more than 30 law enforcement officers were on scene and setting up a perimeter around the man, McMasters said around 1:30 p.m. Details about the reported assault were not immediately available, although the victim was not transported for medical care, McMasters said.It was unclear what type of weapon allegedly was involved, though it was not a gun, the lieutenant said. The standoff was ongoing in the early afternoon.
