Ontario County Sheriff David Cirencione spoke with 13WHAM on Thursday, January 16, 2025, detailing the investigation that led to the arrest of Keiana Borum from Newark, Wayne County, for allegedly selling fentanyl to a 27-year-old woman who tragically died from an overdose. The weekslong investigation culminated in Borum's arrest at her residence.
Sheriff Cirencione described the circumstances surrounding the victim's death as unusual, stating, 'You don't see 27-year-old people pass away normally at that age, seemingly healthy by all other accounts.' \The sheriff emphasized the severity of fentanyl, explaining that 'it's so dangerous because it's a respiratory suppressant. It slows down and pretty much shuts down the respiratory system, basically your voluntary response to breathe.' He stressed the meticulous nature of their investigations, stating, 'Each case is different. We examine every piece of it. You know, what's important is, yeah, where the transaction starts, if it's by phone or text message, where, where the buyer is, where the seller is, where the transaction ultimately occurs.' \Borum faces charges of third-degree criminal sale of a controlled substance. Sheriff Cirencione expressed deep sympathy for the victim's family, who lost their daughter and loved one just eight days before Christmas, saying, 'Our hearts break for the family of this young woman who lost a daughter and family member eight days before Christmas. We're committed to bringing justice to them for their daughter.' He concluded with a warning to those engaged in drug sales, stating, 'Some of you that are out there, we're already wise to what you're doing. We may already be following you. We may already have bought drugs from you, and we may just be putting our case together, but our investigators are out there, and they will be holding you accountable.
