China has taken a softer tone than usual in its public response to a major breakthrough in relations with Australia.

China slapped a series of trade tariffs and out-right bans on Australian products including wine, beef, coal and barley between 2020 and 2021.But Canberra confirmed on Tuesday the two governments had reached a pathway to resolving the barley dispute as China launched a review of the duties which will work in tandem with Australia withdrawing its relevant WTO trade dispute.

“Our two economies have a lot to offer each other and such cooperation is good for both sides,” spokesman Wang Wenbin said at the foreign ministry’s regular daily press conference. The spokesperson then stuck to China’s tried and tested talking points but avoided a dig at Australia or its close ties with Beijing’s emerging strategic rival, the United States.

The total damage of China’s crippling trade sanctions costs Australian producers in the vicinity of $20 billion a year. He said while diversifying into new export markets was “exciting” the return of China would do wonders for Australia’s rural communities.
