Officials say they're working on getting the situation back to normal.
A shelter-in-place order that was in effect for almost eight hours on Sunday has been lifted in Lancaster County after residents were warned of an ammonia leak at Kunzler Meat Company.
During a live video update, HazMat 2 Environmental Fire Rescue Chief Ben Herskowitz said the shelter-in-place order was lifted at 2:30 p.m.for a half-mile southwest around the Kunzler Meat Company facility on Manor Street. Herskowitz said the hazmat team dispatched after a report of individuals experiencing the smell of ammonia inside and outside of the meat facility. When the hazmat team arrived at the scene, the leak was contained as of 11:49 a.m., he said.
There may be occasions of a brief emergency smell “but it’s not harmful to the public,” Herskowitz said.“It is an ammonia leak, it’s a complex system,” said Herskowitz. “And so shutting it down takes time for pressure to balance in the system and make sure all the proper procedures are followed so that we can keep the community safe.”
He said much of the ammonia that was released might have been dispersed in a liquid form that vaporizes quickly. It’s not yet known what caused the leak.
