Producer Lee Aronsohn reveals that Sheldon Cooper's (Jim Parsons) most iconic trait in CBS' The Big Bang Theory was apparently unscripted.

Producer Lee Aronsohn reveals that Sheldon's iconic The Big Bang Theory trait was unscripted. Known for his many quirks and eccentricities, Jim Parsons' Sheldon Cooper was the true main lead of the nerd-centric sitcom. Over the years, he had demonstrated some of the most bizarre behaviors in The Big Bang Theory, including arguably one of his best habits — knocking three times.

Aronsohn shares in Jessica Radloff's The Big Bang Theory: The Definitive, Inside Story of the Epic Hit Series that Sheldon's knocking ritual wasn't actually in the script. In fact, the idea only came up when they were already filming the scene. Eventually, everyone got on board with the funny idea that they made it a staple gag in The Big Bang Theory. SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT It was just one of those things where the stage direction was Sheldon knocks on the door, Penny answers. And I just said, “What if he does this?” And I demonstrated that instead of one knock and Penny opens the door, it was three knocks. It showed Sheldon’s obsessive compulsiveness. People like that like patterns and structure, so we had some fun with Sheldon once that got established.

The Big Bang Theory reveal was heartbreaking, humanizing the usually robotic Sheldon. However, it created a big challenge for its prequel as it means that Young Sheldon still needs to tackle George's cheating storyline. What makes this trickier is the fact that the family comedy features a better version of the Cooper patriarch than what Sheldon and Mary described in The Big Bang Theory.

During The Big Bang Theory's later seasons, however, Sheldon's three-knock rule wasn't as prominently featured. There was no explanation for this, but it's possible that it was because he became more secure in his relationships. Knowing that Amy and his friends would never betray his trust like his dad did allowed him to ease up on his bizarre habit.
