In the past four months she has run 16:49 for 5,000 meters on the track and 1:16:56 (5:53 pace) for a half marathon—all before she has spent a single day in high school.
“I wrote my training schedule based off of some Bowerman workouts from the fall,” she said. “When I was done writing it, I showed it to one of the Bowerman coaches and asked him what he thought about it, and he thought it was pretty good.”
Peters’s parents and coaches know she’s an outlier—in a good way. “She’s doing it for all of the right reasons,” Heath said, “being excited about running. We’re trying to find the balance between making sure she keeps it fun and has exposure to all those other things to build her athleticism. But also not trying to extinguish really natural excitement for a kid who has a joy and general passion for running.
But Peters’s parents aren’t worried. They’ve forced a few Sundays off this summer—“It was torture,” Peters said—and they insist her motivation comes from within.
