Sue Reynolds dropped 200 pounds and became an inspiration to those around her.
“I’ve come to recognize how much pride gets in my way between something I’d like to accomplish and getting it done or not,” Reynolds said. “At that first race, I put this wall up. I’d be on one side of the wall and pride was on the other.” She was also terrified, she said. Was she going to have aReynolds dog paddled portions of the swim, and she sat on a cooler, ate a sandwich, and brushed her hair at the first transition. She finished dead last. And she was hooked.
“I’m freaked out,” she said about actually racing during the swim portion. “I told my coach I thought we had a problem. He laughed and said, ‘Sue, that’s a good thing. On the street, don’t push anyone down. In sports, that’s okay. That doesn’t mean you’re a bad person.’”By 2015, she had gone from training 20 minutes, five days a week to training 10 hours a week over six days. She was down to 144 pounds.
If she deviates from her plan, she moves on. “I just restart,” she said. “I go back to the plan. I don’t beat myself up.”
