Law enforcement personnel arrive for a funeral mass for Robb Elementary School teacher Eva Mireles, 44, at Sacred Heart Church in Uvalde, Texas, Friday, June 10, 2022. She was one of 21 murdered in a mass shooting at the school on May 23.UVALDE — In Friday’s mid-morning heat, hundreds of mourners crowded into Sacred Heart Catholic Church here to remember Eva Mireles, the teacher who tried to save her fourth-grade students as a gunman invaded her classroom on May 24.
The 44-year-old teacher with a beaming smile is remembered for her love for her husband and adult daughter, as well as her passions — for CrossFit workouts, hiking, her dog Kane and singing Rihanna’s “Diamonds” at the top of her lungs. More than a week ago, mourners packed the same church for the funeral of Garcia and her husband, Jose Antonio “Joe” Garcia. He died of an apparent heart attack two days after his wife’s murder.
By 11:30 a.m., mourners flooded out of Sacred Heart, walked to their vehicles and joined the winding funeral procession, which included a black hearse carrying Mireles’ casket, several Thin Blue Line LEMC bikers and a Uvalde Volunteer Fire Department truck.
