SheHulk director Kat Coiro responds to the criticism of the show's VFX. 'I think a lot of the reactions have to do with the fact that she is so different than anything we’ve seen.'
She-Hulk: Attorney At Law director responds to the criticism of the VFX around the title character. The series stars Tatiana Maslaney as Jennifer Walters, the cousin of Bruce Banner aka The Hulk, as she balances her life between being a lawyer and a superhero. She-Hulk: Attorney At Law is the next entry in the MCU following Thor: Love and Thunder and Ms. Marvel and will premiere on Disney+ on August 17, 2022.
The first trailer was met with criticism by many due to She-Hulk's appearance. While it was still months before the show's premiere the first look at the character was not a great first impression for many. A trailer with bad visual effects can do a lot of harm to a potential project, as DC knows when they rushed a Green Lantern trailer out in 2010. The trailer was met with criticism of the suit, something the film was never able to recover from and eventually went on to become a bomb.
"It really is taking the design and asking, ‘Are we getting those facial expressions and those nuances of reaction? That is where all the time comes into play, just really honing in. I think a lot of the reactions have to do with the fact that she is so different than anything we’ve seen. When you think of Thanos or Hulk, they have a grisliness and a harshness and a bulkiness to them that is just so different.
Criticism of the She-Hulk is one of many recent issues Marvel Studios has faced regarding the studio's visual effects. Many have criticized Thor: Love and Thunder's visual effects, particularly use of the Volume. More telling was when a former VFX artist opened up about the poor working conditions at Marvel Studios.
She-Hulk is now just over a month away, and Marvel Studios is in a far different place in terms of audience and critical reaction than they were at the beginning of the year following the release of Spider-Man: No Way Home. The mixed reaction to Moon Knight, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and Thor: Love and Thunder have certainly put Marvel Studios in a position they haven't quite found themselves in since the divisive releases of Iron Man 3 and Thor: The Dark World in 2013.
