, six grief-stricken people meet for their weekly group therapy session. But the bereaved, who are each dealing with devastating loss, are faced with a dilemma. Their therapist has not shown up.in New York City? Will the group, who make up a mosaic of differing ages and backgrounds, go rogue and continue with the session in a new way? Who will lead? Who will follow? What are the rules? Directed by Tatiana Pandiani , the play reflects on loss and the price we pay for loving people deeply.

The unknown can be scary. But it’s also an opportunity for magic to happen. In a group therapy setting it’s a complicated magic. As author Leigh Bardugo writes, “easy magic is pretty. Great magic asks that you trouble the waters. It requires a disruption, something new.”from a very personal place after her mother passed away suddenly. “I realized how uncomfortable people were talking about death,” she says. “Everyone wants to help, but has no clue what to do or say.

“Group therapy without the therapist felt particularly dangerous, exciting and theatrical,” says Feraud. “It raises the stakes of this particular session, and strips the characters of any politeness they might otherwise possess. Without a referee, things quickly become messy, and that was especially intriguing to me here because grief is messy. These characters are waiting for someone who is never going to come, and in some ways, isn't that what grief is?”helped her heal.

“I can access her more easily than I think,” she says. “Writing the play has helped me find compassion for both myself and my family members. And it's shown me that as long as I have a pen in my hand, my mom will always be alive.”It taught me that grief is nothing to be ashamed of. I learn a lot from audience members who share their losses with me. I see so much strength in their very presence at the theatre.

Two years down the line, I have been embarrassed, at times, over my tears for my mother. Yet when I see people crying during the show, I am so moved by their love and vulnerability. Grief is love, and we should never apologize for loving someone. Loss is universal. We may think we are alone in our suffering, but we're not. Sharing and listening and finding empathy and compassion are invaluable skills to develop that will serve you well in life, and especially in grief and loss.
