A who’s who of the fashion world joined in a celebration of the life of Roxanne Lowit at NeueHouse last night.
Naomi Campbell, Simon Doonan, Donna Karan, Fran Drescher, and Pat Cleveland were among the many who gave tribute to the woman and artist.
Among Lowit’s style signatures were her close-cropped hair, a Chinese-style jacket, and sunglasses at night. She adopted an all-black uniform, which was useful in her line of work. So it was amusing to hear that Doonan and Lowit’s pet names for each other were Blanche. She had a look, for sure, but it was her way of being, her big heart, her way of taking people under her wing that was much remarked on.
Though she had an art background, Lowit was a self-taught photographer who pioneered backstage fashion photography. We take all-access for granted today because of Lowit’s accomplishments. A female in a male-dominated industry, she was whisked backstage by models who trusted her in places that were supposed to be off-limits. “No one shot the way you shot us,” Campbell said in a video tribute. “No one will ever shoot the way you shot us. No one will ever have that intimacy with us again.
The seeming effortlessness of Lowit’s photographs is the result of her skill. She put in the time, going uptown to downtown, from party to after-party, and finding ways legal and maybe not so legal. “Roxanne had an eye and a vision and a determination. Not always the most practical determination,” said her dear friend Dr. Brian Saltzman, “like the time she broke into a house in LA to do a photoshoot. She had to get that one perfect shot before the cops came.
