As in the original, the hero is always looking to crack jokes at moments of maximum peril
Every time there is a big action set-piece, it will be followed by scenes set in high school or in the foster home or, most incongruously, at a paediatrician’s office . The conceit of having teenagers as the superheroes sometimes backfires. Shazam has a big crush on, and in one excruciating scene, he tries to sweet talk her. She’s a grown-up. He may be in an adult body but is still a kid. The scene is jarring in the extreme.
Mirren is her usual imperious self as Hespera, but Lucy Liu’s Calypso is the most malevolent of the sisters, riding on a fire-breathing dragon as if she is auditioning for a role inPhiladelphia endures biblical misfortunes toward the end of the story as ogres and unicorns run amok in the streets and trees stretch their roots and tendrils across every part of the city. This is impressive enough in its own Armageddon-like way but the plot continually comes close to stalling.
