Shawn Mendes is getting real about his breakup with Camila Cabello and opened up about how the split changed him as a person.
"I wrote this song about a month after Camila and I broke up… A month later, you kind of start having all the memories of things that happened, and all the memories of so many amazing things…And I was writing about that," Shawn said of "When You're Gone."
Shawn also spoke on his stylistic choices for his latest single, like the '80s-inspired tempo and deeper meaning of its lyrics. "I think that's a little bit of the magic trick… If you can kind of reel people in with the sonic of the song, then they'll be listening on their own time, maybe. And then the lyrics will maybe head a little deeper," he explained before revealing that he gave Camila a "heads up" about the song.
"Camila and I have always been writers for as long as we've known each other, so we understand what that means," he started. "And we respect what that means. And there'll always be transparency between us." This isn't the first time Shawn has penned songs about the former Fifth Harmony member. In his 2020 Netflix documentary,, the 23-year-old revealed that most of his songs were actually written about Camila — even before they were dating. "My song comes on the radio or something and I'm like, 'Everything's about you. They're all ... They have always been about you,'" Shawn said of Camila in the doc.
