Ryan Merkley, in the lineup with Erik Karlsson injured, had 13:46 of ice time in the Sharks’ 3-2 win over the Buffalo Sabres
Bob Boughner liked what he saw from Ryan Merkley in his first NHL stint earlier this season and remains impressed with the Sharks’ first-round draft choice from 2018.
“Ryan, for me, even the last time he was called up and now, I think he showed a different level to his game and maturity,” said Boughner, who liked the way Merkley facilitated breakouts against the Sabres. “I think there’s a lot of work to be had still, but I think that he showed a lot of promise.” “I think I showed that I could play here,” Merkley said of the experience. “I mean, it’s also nerve-wracking getting in your first few games and playing in the NHL for the first time. So just having that experience , being more comfortable, being around the guys again, it’s a lot easier.”
It’s unclear what Merkley’s role will be once Karlsson does return, particularly if Karlsson returns before Middleton does. The Sharks could keep Merkley in the lineup, playing on the right side of Vlasic or Simek, return him to the taxi squad or assign him back to the Barracuda, where he has 17 points in 22 games this season.
