One reason for this interest in shark skin is driven by the fact that some shark species have been found to have skin with natural antibacterial properties. These characteristics may lessen the chance of wound infection by preventing or inhibiting the growth of dangerous bacteria on the skin's surface.

“The molecular biology of sharks is unique,” said Jakob Wikström, associate professor of dermatology and principal investigator at Karolinska, and Etty Bachar-Wikström and senior researcher at the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole. Wikström and her team undertook research on the spiny dogfish and other cartilaginous fish species to uncover insights into the biochemistry of the skin of these animals.According to their research, shark skin has an extremely thin layer of mucus that differs chemically from that of other bony fish. This is because shark mucus is nearly neutral in chemical composition and less acidic than some mammalian mucus, including some human mucus.
