NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal talks Fort Worth music festival and being spotted around North Texas.
3:18 PM on Aug 19, 2024 CDT. “We only expected seven or eight thousand .” Instead, some 15,000 fans flocked to “Shaq’s Bass All-Stars Festival,” according to event organizers., the concert is returning to Fort Worth’s Panther Island Pavilion on Nov. 16. O’Neal will again perform as DJ Diesel, this time alongside 16 other acts in dubstep and bass music.
Later, in the 1990s, the first decade of his NBA career, O’Neal released several rap albums, collaborating with luminaries including The Notorious B.I.G, RZA and Phife Dawg.It was not until 2014 — three years after his retirement from the league – that he turned to electronic music, after hearing performers Steve Aoki and Tiësto at the TomorrowWorld festival.
There’s no fixed routine to a Diesel performance, O’Neal said. The first few songs are meant to alert the audience of his presence, as if to declare, “‘Oh there he is,’ ” he explained. He said he gauges concertgoers’ reactions as he plays, dialing the energy up or down accordingly. If the crowd seems uninterested, for example, O’Neal pulls classics from his “heat pack” that everybody knows, he said. But if the kids are “jamming,” he explained, he’ll play a steady stream of high-octane bangers to keep them dancing fora bit longer. “Dubstep is the most physical form of EDM,” said O’Neal, who is no stranger to braving mosh pits.
O’Neal’s ties to North Texas span decades. He visited often as a youngster, when he was growing up in San Antonio. In the early 2000s, O’Neal begged Dallas Mavericks’ owner Mark Cuban to trade for him, in part because of a desire to team up with Dirk Nowitzki, O’Neal recently said on his“When I was a young player, I was very erratic because I was bigger than everybody,” he said. “They said I was a diesel truck with no brakes coming down the hill. So, imagine that: unstoppable.
