World No. 54 Denis Shapovalov captured the Dallas Open title with a 7-6, 6-3 win over No. 5-ranked Casper Ruud in the final. In a tight opening set, both players held serve for 12 consecutive games to open the match. Shapovalov had the clear service advantage though, hitting 12 aces in the opening frame compared to Ruud’s 2. Shapovalov also had the set’s only break point opportunity in the third game, but the Norwegian saved it before holding serve.
The tiebreak was more of the same as both players largely held serve throughout. It was world No. 54 who took the set as Ruud committed three unforced errors in the final four points to give the Canadian a 7-5 win in the tiebreak.Shapovalov carried the momentum from the tie-break straight into the second set as he held serve to open the second frame and got the match’s first break of serve to take a 2-0 lead.
Ruud fought back in the following game and two unforced errors from Shapovalov gave the world No. 5 his first break point of the match. Shapovalov remained composed though and hit a beautiful forehand to save the break point before holding serve to extend his advantage in the second set. Shapovalov took care of business from there, fending off Ruud’s best efforts to serve out the match and win the second set 6-3 and take the Dallas Open title. The win is Shapovalov’s second title in the last four months after his title in Belgrade last November. It is the 25-year-old’s first ATP 500 title and he will enter the world’s top 40 following the tournament.
