ShangChi and the Legend of the Ten Rings star Simu Liu shares an inspiring letter celebrating being fired from his accounting job 10 years ago.
Simu Liu, star of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, celebrates the 10-year anniversary of being fired from his former job in accounting. Released last year, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings tells the story of a martial arts master who must confront his past after being drawn into the web of a dangerous criminal enterprise known as the Ten Rings. The film was a hit with both audiences and critics, boasting a 91% on Rotten Tomatoes and earning over $432 million at the box office.
Although now known to audiences around the world as the titular Shang-Chi, Simu Liu got his start in the film industry working as a stuntman and an extra. Before he earned the role of Jung in the popular sitcom Kim's Convenience in 2016, the Canadian actor tweeted at Marvel, encouraging them to make a movie about an Asian-American hero and putting his name in the ring for the role of Shang-Chi.
So this is a whole ass essay but the gist of it is that ten years ago today I was let go from my job as an accountant at Deloitte and although it devastated me at the time, it ended up being the best thing that ever happened to me.— Simu Liu April 12, 2022 Click here to see the original post. While recognizing that his current success is due partly to luck, Liu encourages others to follow their passions as well, writing"no amount of money is worth compromising your vision for yourself. The pursuit of a dream – YOUR dream – against all odds… that's what life is all about.
With Marvel in the midst of its phase four and the introduction of brand new heroes to replace Robert Downey Jr.'s Iron Man, Chris Evans' Captain America, and Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow, Shang-Chi is poised to potentially become a staple of the MCU. It remains to be seen what the future holds for Liu and for the character of Shang-Chi, but the actor is clearly happy with the direction his career has taken.
