Shane Wright scored a pair of goals for the Seattle Kraken as they rallied from a two-goal deficit to the Red Wings in the third period to force overtime, but Patrick Kane's NHL record-setting goal in the shootout gave Detroit a 5-4 win.

The Kraken managed to tie the game three separate times after facing deficits, including rallying from 4-2 down with less than 10 minutes left to play. Wright's second of the night tied the game just under the 10-minute mark, and Chandler Stephenson scored the game-tying goal with 2:56 left to play to force the extra period. Both teams had good chances to win during 3-on-3 play before Kane scored his 53rd career shootout goal on a filthy backhand finish by Joey Daccord to give Detroit the win. Kane passed former Chicago Blackhawks teammate Jonathan Toews for the all-time record in shootout goals.Matty Beniers, Wright, and Kaapo Kakko each came up empty for Seattle in their shootout attempts.Coming into Seattle with a six-game winning streak, Detroit jumped out to the early lead. Dylan Larkin snapped a shot toward the Kraken net from the left circle that looked as though it would sail by the far post. However, Lucas Raymond got just a deflection with just enough of his stick to redirect the shot inside the post for a 1-0 Red Wings lead less than four minutes into the contest.Seattle's top line answered back to tie the game at 1-1. Kaapo Kakko worked past a check from Joe Veleno to circle behind the Detroit goal. A centering pass to Matty Beniers was initially deflected by Moritz Seider, but the rebound came back to Kakko and the second chance was enough to set up the tying goal. Beniers snapped a shot through the arm of goaltender Cam Talbot for his 12th of the year.A late power play chance on a Chander Stephenson tripping call allowed the Red Wings to take a 2-1 lead into intermission. Jamie Olekisak ended up screening his own goaltender as Seider's shot from the top of the offensive zone three seconds into the man-advantage put Detroit on top.Shane Wright answered back in the second period to again bring the score level. A bad turnover by Joshua Mahura looked like it would set up a prime scoring chance for the Red Wings. Instead, a bouncing puck eventually led to a Seattle rush chance as Wright snapped a hard wrist shot over the glove of Talbot from the right circle for his 10th goal of the season. But another Seattle penalty led to another Detroit power play goal to give the Red Wings the advantage for the third time in the game. Jonatan Berggren found a clean look immediately off a face-off win by Andrew Copp that beat Daccord for a 3-2 lead. The Kraken finally got their first power play chance with 56 seconds left in the second period and opened the third period on the advantage. Talbot denied Stephenson with a glove save on a chance in close on the back post to preserve the lead as Detroit killed off the penalty.Another power play chance for the Red Wings followed almost immediately afterward as Wright tripped Vladimir Tarasenko. Though it came just as Wright exited the box, Detroit effectively scored their third power play goal of the night to extend the lead. A scramble in front of the net saw the puck come loose in front of Daccord for a backhanded finish by Elmer Soderblom for a 4-2 Detroit lead.Wright scored his second of the night and 11th of the year to make it a one-goal game with 10 minutes left. Wright beat Talbot with a quick wrist shot after his backhand pass attempt was deflected by Ben Chiarot.A perfect stretch pass from Brandon Tanev then found a streaking Stephenson up the far wall. Stephenson fought through defenseman Albert Johansson and beat Talbot through the legs to tie the game up at 4-4.Talbot stopped 23 of 27 shots faced from Seattle.Seattle's defense was scrambling in the closing minutes but survived to get to overtime.Talbot came up with three big stops on Jaden Schwartz, Brandon Montour and Vince Dunn in the extra period, and Daccord answered with denials of Alex DeBrincat, Marco Kasper and Dylan Larkin as the game went to the shootout.Neither Beniers or Kakko got shot attempts away as they lost control of the puck in front of the net. Wright's chance was saved by the shoulder of Talbot as Seattle went scoreless in the shootout. Kane's goal was enough to give Detroit ther win as the Kraken fell to 1-3 in shootouts this season. Their only victory came against the Minnesota Wild in the second game of the season. They've also lost to the Florida Panthers and Vancouver Canucks.Kraken skaters have missed their last eight attempts in shootouts going back to Jordan Eberle's winning tally against the Wild.Daccord made 36 saves on 40 shots faced for the Kraken. The Kraken play their final home game before the 4 Nations Face-Off break against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Thursday night at 7 p.m. William Nylander scored his second career hat trick on Tuesday night against the Calgary Flames for Toronto, coming eight years to the day after his first in 2017. Nylander leads the Maple Leafs with 33 goals this year.
