We speak to writer and director Shane Dax Taylor on his new tense single-location action-thriller TheBestMan, starring Luke Wilson and Dolph Lundgren:

Saban Films’ The Best Man is a new action-thriller that puts a new spin on a classic concept. The Best Man takes inspiration from the single-location intensity of the iconic first film in what would become the Die Hard franchise but swaps out a claustrophobic office building for a sunny resort. The story kicks off in earnest when a team of mercenaries takes control of a resort, which happens to be hosting a cadre of former Special Ops soldiers attending their friend’s wedding.

Shane Dax Taylor: I was going to direct another film for the company, and one thing led to another, and I ended up on this one. I wanted to ground it as much as possible, [and] make it as believable as possible. Not that this is completely believable, don't get me wrong, but I just wanted to ground it. I wanted to make these relationships personal. I made Nicky's and Scout's characters sisters. Dolph Lundgren is always a bad guy; I made him a good guy.

Shane Dax Taylor: I've done drama, thriller, horror, [and] other things. I just did a comedy. This one was [about] safety first. There are a lot of stunts in this film. It was the choreography, and the time [it took] to work with actors. Other than Dolph, these aren't big action actors and actresses, so [I had to account for] the time for that, and safety, and then also to make sure that the choreography was right.

It was confined, but when people think confined, they think of a single house. This was a massive, massive resort, so we had run of the place, but also, "How do we do this in a way that still feels original, but also [where] you still have the action, and you still hit those beats of the action?" In Die Hard, for one, we got to know the characters.

Shane Dax Taylor: I enjoyed working with him, and it was an honor to get that opportunity. I've had action scenes in films, [but] I've never done a full action film, [so I got] to take notes from him. He's been there, he's done that. He's now directing his own action films. It's talking to him about what's important within the scene. I think I said to him, "Show me something I haven't seen in this.

I spoke to Brendan Fehr the other day, and he alluded to you having a tight shooting schedule for this. Do you enjoy working at a faster pace?
