Shakira is turning her upcoming Brooklyn concert into a celebration of the people who have been showing up for others. Ahead of her Tuesday show, the Colombian superstar gifted tickets to three groups of New Yorkers: volunteers at Lulla's supporting earthquake relief efforts in Venezuela, union workers whose labor helped make the World Cup possible, and Colombian restaurant owners who participated in the community.
In a statement, Shakira expressed gratitude for the work of these individuals, highlighting the unseen efforts that made the World Cup special. She thanked them for their hard work, calling them the true she-wolves. New York World Cup Czar Maya Handa praised the gesture, noting that union workers, many of them women, volunteers supporting Venezuela relief, and Colombian restaurateurs are the heart of the city.
Among those honored is NYHTC member Biviana Pereira Leiva, who came from Colombia and works as a union member and room attendant. Sandra Leiton, a 32BJ member, praised Shakira's resilience and representation.
Additionally, Ximena Sariñana is set to receive the award for music at the 39th annual Hispanic Heritage Awards on Sept. 10. The recognition honors her more than two decades of work across music, activism, and film. Sariñana expressed gratitude and a sense of responsibility to continue creating and uplifting the Hispanic community. Hispanic Heritage Foundation president Antonio Tijerino called her an embodiment of the leadership needed.
The Latin Grammy Cultural Foundation also announced the launch of its fifth annual Leading Ladies of Entertainment Mentorship Program, presented with Open Society Foundations. The initiative offers three months of one-on-one mentorship to aspiring women in the industry. Executive director Raquel Egusquiza noted a significant increase in young women seeking mentorship. Mentors include Lila Downs, Goyo, Leslie Grace, Angie Martínez, Dayanara Torres, and others.
BelicoFest made its L.A. debut with more than 17,500 fans attending. Headlined by Tito Double P, the festival featured Gerardo Ortiz, Santa Fe Klan, Régulo Caro, Chuyin, Snow Tha Product, and Clave Especial, with OhGeesy bringing out Ty Dolla $ign and YG. The event underscored the dominance of música mexicana in Los Angeles, a key U.S. hub.
The lineup collectively reaches nearly 38 million monthly listeners on Spotify and has generated over 10.2 billion streams in the past year, with Los Angeles alone accounting for more than 74 million streams. This marks another major live milestone for the genre's global growth
