Dench talks about the many Shakespearean roles she has played during a seven-decade career
Judi Dench as Titania and Oliver Chris as Bottom in ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ directed by Peter Hall at the Rose Theatre Kingston upon Thames “This was never meant to be a book” is an appealingly frank opening line. The plan was, explains actor and co-author Brendan O’Hea, for him to record his friendtalking about the many Shakespearean roles she has played during a seven-decade career and offer the finished tapes to the archives at Shakespeare’s Globe.
“Phebe is an arse-paralysing part”, she tells us cheerfully of the long wait to take to the stage in this minor role in. Macbeth’s enduring appeal is pithily summarised in the last line of that chapter as “short, no interval, pub : heaven”. Ophelia at the Old Vic was her first professional role out of drama school while she played Gertrude, mother to a troubled Daniel Day-Lewis, in Richard Eyre’s National Theatre version. In Dench’s reading Gertrude, or “Dirty Gerty” as she puckishly christens her, has long harboured feelings for her rather dull late husband’s rakish brother Claudius.
