Third and fourth graders rallied in front of Onaway School in Shaker Heights to protest the planned relocation of their beloved native pollinator garden beds 🐝
In the week leading up to Earth Day, Onaway School students protested the announced relocation of their native garden.CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Students and protest go together like peanut butter and jelly.
Because Shaker is an International Baccalaureate school district, Kalan created the gardens and student garden club to provoke curiosity and promote inquiry-based learning.
In a process familiar to all native gardeners, Kalan describes how, “as time went on, the garden plants itself and plants decide where they want to be.” He wisely allowed the succession process to happen, and with the bounty of plants was able to expand to four beds, including one rain garden and one dry bed. The overflow of plants is also donated to the Shaker Nature Center for their annual plant sale, taken home by students, and shared with other native plant enthusiasts.
However, what appears to be an all-you-can-eat buffet to swallowtail moths and goldfinches looks like a weedy mess to those in the Onaway community who would like to relocate the garden.
