Bryan Felt, the Pirates athletic director, said he would have hired Holloway even if his Peacocks hadn’t gone on their magical March run. “He certainly made it easier!” Felt said with a laugh. He didn’t even talk to any other candidates, calling Holloway “the clear choice” — and, in an era when half of the people you meet wouldn’t agree on the color of the sky, this was unanimous.
If Holloway looked over his left shoulder during his introduction, he would have seen the huge banner for the 1989 NCAA West Regional Champions. That team, which came one awful foul call away from winning the national title, has been both a blessing and a curse for all the coaches who followed P.J. Carlesimo, the man who got the Pirates that close to history.
, no head coach was talked about more than Holloway. He will need to hit the transfer portal to keep the Pirates from taking a step back in his first season, and all the attention he’s garnered for his success at Saint Peter’s can only help attract talent.“We’re happy that he could change his life like this, because he changed all of our lives,” said guard Daryl Banks III, one of Holloway’s top players in Jersey City. “It was a no brainer that we had to be here to support him.
