PETALING JAYA: Young goalkeeper Shafiq Afifi Suhaimi became Penang’s hero when he pulled off two superb saves in their 4-3 penalty shootout win over Kedah in the FA Cup first round on Wednesday.
The 23-year-old Shafiq, who only became the Panthers’ first-choice netminder this season, denied midfielder Lee Tuck and centreback Bojan Ciger from the spot after the match ended 2-2 at full time.
For Shafiq, the dramatic win gave him great satisfaction as he reflected on a tough year in 2021 when he struggled to recover from a health problem caused by a blood clot in his brain. ‘’I played only three games last season but this season, I was given the role of the main goalkeeper.’’ “Syam did a lot of research on Kedah’s penalty takers, and jotted down the pointers on a note which I kept in one of my gloves. I must thank him for that.’’
