The $22,000 grant for the school's growing system came through Moonflower Farms in South Houston, a commercial vertical hydroponic farm. A $250 grant from the Roots and Shoots program at The Jane Goodall Institute provided the money to purchase 25 grow kits for schools.
“That was definitely an 'aha moment,'” said Vijayan, who was amazed to see food grown without soil or GMOs and pesticides. “To them, I was a whippersnapper, this kid who had been their intern,” Marques said with a laugh. “Now, Rahul is my whippersnapper. He’s sharp, he’s enthusiastic. I have come full circle and I love his excitement.Vijayan said his Farm to Tray group aims to use technology to solve child-nutritional problems.
