Sha'Carri Richardson has claimed a silver Olympic medal after finishing second in the women’s 100-meter final, three years after she was controversially barred from competing in the Tokyo Games. The win marks her first Olympic medal. The 24-year-old athlete ran the sprint event in 10.87 seconds, finishing 0.15 seconds behind gold winner Julien Alfred, who clinched the first-ever Olympic medal for her island country of Saint Lucia.
Though she secured her spot on Team USA in 2021, this is Richardson’s first Olympic Games after she was disqualified from the 2020 Tokyo Olympics for testing positive for THC. The track star—who was mourning the recent death of her mother at the time—shared that while she understood the protocols of the competition, she struggled with ways to cope with grief. In the three years since then, she’s tallied up wins at several Diamond League meets, the 2023 U.S.
