In a shocking turn of events, Richardson just missed making the U.S. Olympic team in the 200 meters Saturday night, finishing fourth in the final at the Olympic Trials in Eugene, Ore.Richardson ran 22.16 a day after matching her personal best of 21.92 in Friday’s semifinals. But even that PR wouldn’t have been good enough to finish in the top three and advance to the Paris Games later this summer.Gabby Thomas, the 2021 Olympic bronze medalist, won Saturday’s final in 21.81.
Richardson had to be extra careful in the final after being issued a warning for a lane violation in Friday’s semifinal. That meant that if she did it again, she’d be disqualified.at the trials a week earlier to earn a trip to Paris, and she will have a spot on the women’s 4x100 relay team at the Olympics. It was expected that she would at least make the top three in the 200.
But Thomas has never lost to Richardson in a 200. And Thomas was the favorite going into Saturday after posting the best time in the world for 2024 with a 21.78 in Friday’s semifinals.Still, it has been a dramatic turnaround for the 24-year-old Richardson, who won the 100 at the Olympic trials in 2021, only to see the victory stripped because of a positive marijuana test.
