Toll revenue will be used to fund construction between northbound Interstate 35 West and SH 121,while TxDOT funding is allocated to the reconstruction of frontage roads along I-35 West and the bridge above SH 121. Reconstruction requires full demolition to raise the vertical clearance in order to increase safety while simultaneously reducing congestion in the underpass. The reconstruction and demolition process will take about 18 months to complete, according to TxDOT officials.Ramps and frontage roads between Sylvania Avenue and Riverside Drive will also be reconstructed. Work is set to begin by the end of the year and should be completed within three years, per TxDOT officials. An additional $10 million in toll revenue funding for the Lyndon B. Johnson East corridor was also approved. According to TxDOT officials, changes in budget and schedule are “typical for projects of this size and duration.” The managed lane revenue will be used for improvements along the corridor, including lane striping, painting beams, barriers and walls, and drainage improvements. The additional funding also addresses and improves the transition between Interstate 30 and HOV lanes.The $1.6 billion project uses a mix of regional and federal funds, approved several years before construction began in 2020.
